Newhaven Open Call

AN OPEN INVITATION

Newhaven Open Call is an artist led initiative inviting local people and visitors to the area to make art about Newhaven.

www.newhavenprojects.co.uk

The idea is for anyone to make art, in any medium, based on their personal experience of being in the town, responding to places, artefacts, nature or social and political agendas. Engage with the location and make Art!

Please read below for supporting workshop on July 27th at Newhaven Museum

Please read the guidelines fully. We want you to enter something NEW and not work that already exists ~ WE WILL ONLY ACCEPT NEW WORK

For an artist, perhaps it’s an opportunity to do something different. Maybe collaborate?

Work from each participant will be selected for the final exhibition which is to be held in rooms at The Ship Hotel in Newhaven during August and September and is an Artwave event.

There will be workshops and drawing events during the Summer to help those who may not have access to Art education, are less familiar with making art, want to make connections or need some help with ideas.

*** SUBMISSION DATE IS SUNDAY 18 AUGUST ***

Printed guidelines with a map can also be collected from the Lewes and Seaford Tourist Information shops, Newhaven Town Council office in Fort Road and the Newhaven Museum at Paradise Park – please check opening times

Taking the form of a walking tour we'll visit a series of site specific art pieces created to open discussion on the nature of luck, all inspired by the charms and rituals people often protect themselves - and loved ones - with during uncertain times, especially soldiers in WW1.

Adults, accompanied children and well behaved dogs welcome.

Most of the Fort is accessible, however, some of the tunnels and ramparts are not accessible due to the nature of the architecture and building structure. Please see the Newhaven Fort website for further details.

MELD- A Holding the Fort event

MELD 1-3pm Rachel Cohen

MELD is an event for improvisers of all art forms: music, dance, visual art, theatre and spoken word,
hosted by Rachel Cohen

The idea is to bring together artists and performers from these various disciplines and play together.

We play instruments and everyday objects. We use our voices, texts, our bodies and the space around us.

MELD is not a gig. Everyone who comes is a participant. We perform for ourselves not for an audience, .

To take part you don't need to be a professional artist or performer. Just to be open to improvising. There will be some structures to work with.

It’s not aimed at children, more about allowing adults to indulge in childlike play.

This session is free and includes entry to the Fort but you need to book by email mail@rachelcohen.co.uk

Shanty Singing Workshop & performance

With Emily Longhurst - Maximum tickets - 50

11am – 1pm followed by an afternoon performance of singing and stories of smugglers and Newhaven characters.

Tickets £5 - https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/shanty-singing-workshop-tickets-65437518379

Shanties are wonderful, rousing songs with a long tradition and history. They have come from many different lands and have travelled all around the world with the sailors who sang them. They are a joy to sing, uplifting, moving, raucous, tender, full of power and love and the passions of life at sea.

Emily has been learning, singing and teaching shanties and songs of the sea for a number of years and cannot get enough of the exhiliration and joy of singing a good shanty!

Come and joing her for an uplifting session of singing right next to our river.

The feeling of a natural high is created in part by the release of a group of feel good chemicals called endocannabinoids. We make them naturally in our bodies.

 What activities produce endocannabinoids?

30 mins of cycling - endocannabinoid levels increased by 19%

30 mins of dancing - endocannabinoid levels increased by 21%

30 mins of singing - endocannabinoid levels increased by 42% and was also linked with a general sustained improvement in mood.
